Overview
Led by Matthew Weatherhead and Professors Sarah Lloyd-Fox, Lee de-Wit and Christelle Langley, Department of Psychology
Many students now use AI to summarise research papers instead of reading them, missing the chance to build core skills such as interpreting evidence and evaluating methods. This project asks whether AI can be designed to deepen students’ engagement with primary research. The team will build an AI “Socratic coach”: instead of giving answers, it asks students probing questions about a paper and challenges incomplete reasoning, so the critical thinking stays with the student.
The coach will be tested with undergraduate students taking the second-year module in Developmental Psychology and compared against equivalent practice without AI feedback. The aim is to determine whether gains carry over to students’ independent work.
