Overview

Developing independent genomic judgement with AI

Led by Timothy Hearn, Department of Genomic Medicine

Genomic medicine students can now use AI to write code, interpret genetic variants and draft explanations for patients. They still need to show that they understand and can defend the work. This project redesigns teaching across three modules of the Cambridge Genomic Medicine Programme. Students will use AI for a bioinformatics analysis, then explain their choices. They will prepare a case with AI for a simulated clinical team meeting, then defend their interpretation. And they will use AI to prepare for a patient counselling role play, which they then conduct without it.

A comparison in database practicals will test how access to AI affects learning. The team will produce reusable activity packs, rubrics and guidance on matching AI use to learning goals, to share with colleagues in clinical medicine, natural sciences and beyond.
