Overview

Cambridge-owned hardware and software for AI-augmented supervisions

Led by Professor Will Handley and Toby Lovick, Institute of Astronomy

Cambridge’s small-group supervisions matter more than ever in an age of AI, but supervisors are under pressure to deliver fresh material to growing numbers of students, and insights shared in the supervision room are spoken once and lost. This project will pilot low-cost devices, built on Raspberry Pi and run on Cambridge-hosted AI models, with twenty supervisors across the physical sciences. The devices will record supervision discussions and whiteboards so students can revisit them. The AI will also review submitted work in advance, so supervisors can see where individual students need help.

Supervisors will stay in control, checking all feedback before students see it, and students opt in to being recorded. The pilot will test whether handing administrative work to AI frees supervisors to focus on individual students, and whether insights from one supervision group can benefit others.
