As policymakers around the world grapple with questions about the future of AI, evidence and advice about its progress, use, and impact is vital. ai@cam's PolicyLab provides a forum for bringing together researchers and policymakers to generate high-quality insights to inform public and policy debates. Bridging research, policy, and practice, and drawing from the University's expertise across disciplines, it will convene expertise that helps build a well-founded public conversation about AI.
The report is a collaboration between the Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy, the Bennett Institute for Public Policy, and ai@cam which argues that the unregulated use of Generative AI in the UK economy will not necessarily lead to economic growth, and risks damaging the UK’s thriving creative sector.
This policy brief examines how to bridge the gap between AI’s technical capabilities and real-world public benefit. Through analysis of current policy approaches and stakeholder engagement, the report outlines recommendations for centering social needs in AI development and deployment while building effective governance frameworks.
